National Hurricane Center projects Hurricane Lowell to turn northward, posing possible threat to Hawaii next week
The NHC forecasts Hurricane Lowell will track westward south of the Hawaiian Islands before turning north as a major hurricane, with a wind advisory in effect for parts of Oahu, Maui County and the Big Island through Thursday.
The National Hurricane Center's latest forecast shows Hurricane Lowell moving westward far south of the Hawaiian Islands over the next two days, then curving northward late this weekend and early next week as a major hurricane. Officials said there is a possibility the storm could impact the state next week.
A wind advisory remains in effect for selected areas of Oahu, Maui County and the Big Island through Thursday afternoon. Additionally, moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Karina may increase the likelihood of showers over the weekend.
Swells generated by Lowell are expected to affect south and southeast shores today, with extra-large surf anticipated for south and southwest coasts early next week.
"Now is the time to make a plan for worst-case scenario in order to be able to take action if and when needed," a spokesperson advised residents.
