The Trump administration’s Interior Department has warned the Smithsonian Institution that its support may be withdrawn due to the museum’s leadership promoting radical left-wing ideology and undermining American values.
The U.S. Department of the Interior, under the Trump administration, took decisive action Friday by sending a letter to the Smithsonian Institution, warning that the agency may halt vital support such as artifact loans, procurement assistance, and discretionary grants. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House domestic policy aide Vince Haley rightly pointed out that the museum’s current leadership is advancing a 'radical ideology' that threatens to erode the shared American identity and values that have long united the nation.
The letter, made public by the department, called for an in-person meeting with the Smithsonian’s board to address serious concerns outlined in a July White House Domestic Policy Council report. That report detailed how the museum has allegedly violated anti-discrimination law and fostered a 'culture of ideological activism,' specifically criticizing the National Museum of American History for presenting materials that undermine trust in American institutions. Such activism, masquerading as scholarship, risks indoctrinating visitors with divisive leftist narratives.
The Smithsonian refused to comment on the letter or reveal whether a meeting has been set. Secretary Lonnie Bunch previously dismissed the report’s findings as unfair, insisting that the institution’s work is guided by scholarship and accuracy—a claim that rings hollow given the museum’s recent track record of promoting controversial and revisionist perspectives.
This bold move by the administration follows earlier efforts to restore accountability and ensure that the Smithsonian, which should be above partisan politics, does not become a vehicle for left-wing propaganda.
