Leak Suggests Apple’s A20 Pro Chip Will Feature Seven-Core GPU and Wider Memory Bus
A schematic posted on Weibo claims Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro processor will add a seven-core GPU, a 96-bit memory interface and a larger L2 cache for efficiency cores.
A diagram of the alleged A20 Pro chip, shared by a Weibo user, indicates several hardware upgrades over the current A19 Pro. The layout, reconstructed by mapping solder ball positions and overlaying die-level images, shows a two-plus-four core CPU arrangement and a seven-core GPU positioned at the top of the die.
According to the post, the efficiency cores would share an 8 MB L2 cache, an increase from the 6 MB used in the A19 Pro, while the performance cores would retain a 16 MB L2 cache. The size of the shared system-level cache was not disclosed, but the leaker expects it to remain unchanged despite a new image-signal processor and neural engine.
The GPU count would rise from six to seven cores, roughly a 16% boost, and the memory interface is said to expand to 96 bits for LPDDR5x RAM, up from the 64-bit bus in the previous generation—a 50% increase that should raise memory bandwidth and improve graphics performance.
