Mara sisters find sync effortlessly for Werner Herzog's new drama

Summary

Actresses Rooney and Kate Mara said speaking in unison for Werner Herzog's film "Bucking Fastard" was easier than expected, with the director noting minimal rehearsal was needed.

Actresses Rooney and Kate Mara, who are sisters, reported that delivering dialogue in perfect unison for Werner Herzog's drama "Bucking Fastard" proved surprisingly simple. The film, which follows two close siblings who share thoughts, dreams and a love interest, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

"At first, it was very daunting, the idea that we were going to be playing this kind of same person," Rooney said at the press conference. "But I think we found pretty quickly that having a lifetime together and all this history and a childhood of playing together… there was just an unspoken world between us that we didn’t have to work very hard to create at all."

Kate added that the experience felt musical, noting that the synchronicity "felt almost like a song" and occurred naturally.

Herzog, who has long wanted to make the project, said the sisters required little rehearsal, with only five days of preparation before filming began. "I had complete confidence with them," he said.

The story is loosely based on British identical twins Freda and Greta Chaplin, whose real-life obsession with a neighbor led to a restraining order and a spoonerism-derived title. The cast also includes Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson. This film marks the first on-screen collaboration between the Mara sisters, whose previous credits include "The Social Network," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "House of Cards" and "24."
