Tesla to debut autonomous Cybercab in Austin amid limited details
Tesla will hold an invite-only event in Austin, Texas, to demonstrate its steering-wheel-less Cybercab on public roads, marking the first public ride-hailing trial of the vehicle.
Tesla is set to host an invite-only event tomorrow at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, where the company plans to put its Cybercab—a vehicle without steering wheel or pedals—on public roads for a limited number of passengers. The demonstration will be the first time members of the public can ride in the autonomous vehicle outside of a test environment.
Tesla has posted a series of teasers on its social-media platform X in the days leading up to the event, emphasizing the potential of the Cybercab to change ride-hailing services. While the company has not released a detailed agenda, it confirmed that the vehicle will operate within an expanded geofence around Austin, which was recently increased by about nine percent.
The Cybercab was originally unveiled in October 2024, but this event is intended to show that the vehicle is ready for limited real-world operation. Tesla has previously indicated plans to eventually sell the model to consumers and incorporate it into a broader fleet of robotaxi-type vehicles.
Separately, Tesla’s Model Y L variant has faced reports from owners in China of rear-suspension issues that cause the wheel gap to narrow significantly. Some owners have described the problem as a “finger test” where fewer than four fingers fit between the tire and wheel well. Tesla has not issued a recall or publicly acknowledged the issue.
In related news, SpaceX filed a request with the Federal Communications Commission to fly Starlink terminals on its upcoming Starship flight, which aims for an orbital insertion rather than the sub-orbital profile used in previous tests. The filing does not set a launch date, and the company must still obtain FAA clearance before proceeding.
"We are excited to demonstrate the Cybercab in a real-world setting and believe it represents a significant step forward for autonomous mobility," a Tesla spokesperson said.
The Cybercab event is expected to draw attention from investors, Tesla owners, and industry observers, though the company cautioned that safety and a gradual rollout remain priorities.
