Putin says chance of peace with Ukraine as NATO warns Russia of reckless actions

Summary

Russian President Vladimir Putin said a peace possibility exists with Ukraine, while NATO Secretary General warned that Russia’s behavior is increasingly reckless.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok that a "chance" for peace with Ukraine exists, adding that the conflict must be resolved by the two countries themselves. He also described Kyiv’s warning to airlines to avoid Russian airspace as "state terrorism."

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Russia is becoming "increasingly reckless," citing missiles and drones crossing Europe’s eastern flank and a suspected hybrid attack at Germany’s Leipzig airport. He told a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that the alliance is working continuously to protect its citizens and will not be divided or deterred by Russian threats.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged airlines to stay out of Russian airspace, saying it has become "completely unsafe" due to the volume of drones. He noted that Ukraine is expanding long-range drone strikes against Russian energy and military targets. In response, Putin warned that Russia would intensify attacks on Ukraine.

Efforts by the United States and European partners to negotiate an end to the four-year war have so far failed, despite recent diplomatic visits, including a trip by U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Moscow.
