Three dead, including suspect, after downtown Minneapolis apartment shooting
A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building left three people dead, including the gunman, and injured five others, among them two police officers.
Gunfire rang through a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a rapid police response. Authorities said three people died, including the suspected shooter, and five others were wounded, two of whom were Minneapolis police officers. A sixth officer sustained non-gun-related injuries, and all three injured officers are reported to be in stable condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.
A 911 call was logged just after 4:30 p.m. Police entered the building within two minutes and located victims. Officers heard additional shots and moved to an upper floor, where they encountered a haze that limited visibility, according to Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson. One officer was shot in the leg and another twice in the abdomen; all injured officers are expected to recover fully.
The suspect’s identity was not released, but police indicated they were familiar with the individual prior to the incident. It remains unclear how the shooter died. Hennepin County Medical Center treated seven patients, though further details on their conditions were not provided.
Witnesses described the shooter as a resident known for displaying a firearm. Julius Bailey, who was outside the building, said he recognized the gunman and heard a woman screaming before fleeing. Another resident, Chris Miller, reported hearing rapid gunshots and said he had previously reported a person carrying a handgun in the hallway to building management.
Video posted on social media showed police aiming rifles upward at the apartment tower near the Minneapolis Convention Center, and officials advised residents to avoid the nearby Loring Park neighborhood. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state officials were on the ground assisting local law enforcement, and FBI Director Kash Patel indicated the agency would provide any needed resources.
