Two killed and suspect dead in downtown Minneapolis apartment shooting

Summary

A shooting on the upper floor of a high-rise apartment building in downtown Minneapolis left two victims dead, the gunman dead, and two police officers injured.

Police responded to multiple 911 calls about gunfire at a high-rise apartment near the Minneapolis convention center on Wednesday afternoon. Officers entered the building at about 4:39 p.m., encountering a haze that limited visibility, and engaged the shooter. The suspect was killed, and two residents died – one at the scene and another after being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. Two police officers were wounded; one suffered a non-life-threatening leg injury and the other required surgery.

Witnesses described hearing a rapid succession of shots. One resident, Julius Bailey, said he saw a man he recognized from the building brandishing a pistol and heard a woman screaming before fleeing. Another resident, Chris Miller, said he had previously reported a person with a handgun in the hallway to building management.

Mayor Jacob Frey and the Minneapolis police department urged people to avoid the nearby Loring Park neighborhood. Governor Tim Walz thanked law-enforcement agencies for their response, and FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau had deployed additional resources to support the investigation.
