Trump proposes renaming Strait of Hormuz amid heightened US-Iran tensions
President Donald Trump suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself as military and cyber confrontations between the United States and Iran escalated, while oil flows through the waterway reached a recent peak.
President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform that the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil transit route, should be renamed "TRUMP STRAIT," saying the waterway was now under U.S. control. The comment came as hostilities between the United States and Iran intensified following the expiration of a cease-fire agreement last month.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said 17 million barrels of crude passed through the strait on Monday, the highest volume since the conflict began reducing flows. Saudi Arabia confirmed that an Iranian attack on a Bahri-operated tanker in the strait killed two Filipino seafarers.
U.S. officials are investigating Iranian cyber activity that reportedly targeted American telecommunications and energy infrastructure. White House aides, according to sources, are working to limit further escalation ahead of the November midterm elections.
Iran’s currency continued to fall, reaching more than 2.2 million rials per dollar, reflecting the impact of renewed sanctions and military strikes. Iranian border guards seized a vessel carrying 382,000 litres of fuel in the Gulf, arresting its foreign crew.
The U.S. Central Command denied targeting civilians after reports of a strike on a wedding in southern Iran, stating the military does not target non-combatants. France’s UN ambassador warned that the Iranian people suffer from Tehran’s policies and highlighted ongoing discussions on Iran’s nuclear obligations at the Security Council.
