Criticism Grows Over Met Gala Theme After John Galliano Withdraws

Summary

John Galliano has stepped down as the 2027 Met Gala theme designer amid backlash, prompting renewed calls for Vogue chief Anna Wintour to reduce her influence.

John Galliano announced he is withdrawing as the designer of this year’s Met Gala theme after the announcement sparked criticism from Jewish leaders and museum donors. In a statement, Galliano said he remains accountable for past remarks that hurt Jewish and Asian communities and emphasized that genuine atonement requires ongoing effort.

The theme, titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” had been announced by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in July. While some industry observers suggested Wintour’s personal support for Galliano influenced the decision, a source close to the editor said the selection involved many members of the Met board and was not made by her alone.

Sources close to the situation said the backlash reflects broader concerns about the appropriateness of honoring Galliano, whose past includes antisemitic and racist comments made in 2011. The controversy has intensified calls for Wintour to step back from her leadership role at Condé Nast.

"I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry," Galliano said.

"I understand that meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. It is a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning and one’s conduct over time," he added.

A Condé Nast insider suggested that Wintour may have misjudged the public reaction, while a spokesperson for Wintour did not respond to requests for comment.
