Tiger Woods to request new plea in Florida DUI case

Summary

The golfer will appear in Martin County court on Wednesday to seek a change of plea after being charged with DUI and refusal to submit to testing following a March rollover crash.

Tiger Woods is scheduled to appear before a Martin County, Florida judge on Wednesday to request a change of his plea after being charged with driving under the influence and refusing additional drug testing. The 50-year-old professional golfer was arrested in March when his vehicle clipped a truck and rolled over, an incident captured on police body-camera footage released in April. Woods was able to exit the vehicle by crawling through the passenger door and was not injured, nor were any other parties.

At the time of his arrest, Woods passed a breath-alcohol test but declined a urinalysis for other substances, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek. He told officers he had not consumed alcohol and that he had taken prescription medication earlier that morning, later identified as hydrocodone, an opioid painkiller.

Woods initially pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges in March and announced that he would seek treatment. In a social-media post after the crash, he wrote that he understands the seriousness of the situation and is stepping away to focus on his health and recovery. Prosecutors and Woods' attorney have not yet disclosed what new plea he intends to enter.

The hearing will determine whether the plea is altered and what subsequent legal steps will follow.
