Cowboys aim to re-sign quarterback Joe Milton to practice squad

Summary

Dallas released QB Joe Milton but indicated they intend to bring him back as a third-string quarterback if he clears waivers.

The Dallas Cowboys waived quarterback Joe Milton on Monday, creating a roster spot after claiming running back Emari Demercado. The team plans to add Milton back to the practice squad as its third quarterback, pending the outcome of waivers.

Coach Brian Schottenheimer and executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday that Milton’s return is a priority. > "Joe obviously played really good in the preseason games. We really liked his performance... We'd love to have Joe back as our three and on the practice squad," Jones said on the team's official channel.

Milton, who was acquired from New England for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft and served as Dak Prescott’s backup last season, posted a 29-of-43 passing line for 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in three preseason games, adding a rushing touchdown on 12 carries.

If Milton clears waivers, the Cowboys intend to sign him to the practice squad; otherwise, they will need to find another player to fill the third-quarterback role.
