Teen accused in 49ers impersonation fraud barred from dating apps while awaiting trial
Eighteen-year-old Taylor Chan has been released on conditions that prohibit him from using dating or social media apps as he awaits trial for alleged involvement in a wire-fraud scheme that targeted women.
Eighteen-year-old Taylor Chan was released from custody on Aug. 27 after pleading to a list of conditions tied to his alleged role in a wire-fraud conspiracy with Daejon Love, who pretended to be a San Francisco 49ers player. Court documents require Chan to surrender his passport, avoid contact with alleged victims, abstain from alcohol and narcotics, and refrain from using any online dating or social-media applications. He may also only possess a cellphone and must obtain permission from a pretrial services officer before accessing the internet.
Federal prosecutors say the pair used dating platforms such as Hinge, Bumble and Tinder to meet women, then Love impersonated a wealthy football player asking for cash, while Chan posed as his financial advisor to lend credibility. The scheme, which began in February 2022, allegedly defrauded dozens of victims before the suspects were arrested at Boise Airport in Idaho.
Both men face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years. Love remains in custody, with prosecutors describing him as a serious flight risk, while Chan remains free pending trial under the stipulated restrictions.
