Jonathan Bailey Leaves West End Production of “Sunday in the Park With George”

Summary

Actor Jonathan Bailey has withdrawn from the London revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park With George,” following Ariana Grande’s earlier departure, and producers say the show will continue with new casting.

Jonathan Bailey announced he is stepping away from the West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sunday in the Park With George,” joining Ariana Grande, who left the production last month. The London run, staged at the Barbican Centre, was expected to reunite the two performers, who previously appeared together in the hit musical “Wicked.”

"After much consideration, I have decided to step back from ‘Sunday in the Park with George,’" Bailey said in a statement, adding that he wishes the company success and will support the production.

Grande’s exit was attributed to a desire to reduce public exposure after completing her “Eternal Sunshine” tour in London, a decision that coincided with the release of her “Petal” music video.

A representative for Empire Street Productions confirmed that rehearsals and creative work are ongoing, and that casting discussions are in progress. The producers emphasized that the production will retain the artistic integrity of Sondheim and James Lapine’s work while adapting to a new ensemble.
