Germany Blames Russia for Drone Incident at Leipzig Airport

Summary

German officials say a faulty explosive drone found at Leipzig/Halle Airport was part of a Russian hybrid operation, prompting diplomatic measures against Russia.

German interior minister Alexander Dobrindt said a drone carrying an explosive device was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Aug. 4, near Ukrainian cargo flights, and that the incident fits a pattern of Russian hybrid activity in Europe. The device failed to detonate because of a faulty detonator, and investigators believe a second drone may have collided with a nearby cargo aircraft, with a third drone found ten days later.

Foreign minister Johann Wadephul announced plans to close the Russian consulate in Bonn and terminate the lease on the Russian House in Berlin, citing its alleged use for espionage and propaganda. He wrote on X, "The evidence is clear. And I welcome the measures announced by Germany in response."

Russia has denied involvement, while its foreign minister warned of a response to "anti-Russian decisions," according to Interfax. The incident will be discussed at an EU foreign ministers' meeting in Ireland. Germany, which hosts military and NATO logistics at the airport, has previously reported drone sightings at similar sites and is seeking to expand intelligence powers to counter hybrid threats.
