Packers finalize 53-man roster with veteran signings and trades

Summary

Green Bay added depth at tight end, running back and defensive tackle while making several cuts, positioning the team for the 2026 season.

The Green Bay Packers completed their initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season, adding veteran players and making three trades to address depth concerns. General manager Brian Gutekunst signed tight end Jonnu Smith and acquired Mark Redman, giving the team four tight ends after releasing two and placing others on injured lists. Smith, a proven receiver, and Redman, a blocking specialist, are expected to complement each other.

Running back depth was also bolstered with a trade for Pittsburgh’s Kaleb Johnson, a recent third-round pick who posted an All-America season at Iowa. He joins MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks after three reserve backs were released.

Defensive tackle Anthony Campbell, a former practice-squad player, earned a roster spot after recording sacks in each of the Packers’ final two preseason games, surpassing his college production.

Wide receiver J. Michael Sturdivant remains on the roster, extending the team’s streak of carrying an undrafted rookie into Week 1. His placement was aided by an injury to second-year receiver Savion Williams, who was placed on injured reserve.

The Packers are expected to continue roster adjustments after the waiver claim period ends, including adding a quarterback to the practice squad, as they currently have only Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor on the active roster. Injured-reserve designations were used for Williams and edge rusher Collin Oliver, with additional moves possible before the season begins.
