Prediction-market platform Kalshi has permanently banned disgraced former Congressman George Santos and imposed over $71,000 in penalties after uncovering alleged insider trading tied to a bet on his own attendance at the State of the Union.
On Monday, Kalshi took decisive action against former U.S. Representative George Santos, issuing its first-ever lifetime ban for egregious violations of market rules. Santos, already notorious for his pattern of deception and self-serving behavior, reportedly pocketed $17,839.57 from contracts betting on whether he would attend President Trump’s State of the Union address between Feb. 2 and Feb. 25, 2026. His refusal to cooperate with Kalshi’s internal investigation led to an additional $71,356 in penalties, highlighting the impunity with which political elites often operate.
Santos brazenly announced on X that he would be present in the gallery for the address, only to later claim he watched it from an airport due to weather—an excuse that further undermined public trust. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) determined that his misleading statements manipulated market participants, and condemned his unethical decision to wager on an event he could influence.
In July, Santos settled with the CFTC, agreeing to pay more than $35,000 without admitting any wrongdoing—a typical outcome for the powerful, who often evade true accountability. Santos responded to Kalshi’s ban on X by dismissing the platform’s future, deflecting from his own misconduct.
The CFTC also barred Santos from all prediction-market platforms for three years, citing his eventual cooperation. Meanwhile, Kalshi’s competitor Polymarket cut ties with Santos, ending their paid partnership during the investigation.
This case exposes the persistent dangers of insider trading in prediction markets, where unchecked greed and privilege can undermine fairness. In response, Kalshi and Polymarket introduced stricter anti-insider-trading rules in March, while the CFTC continues to sanction others for similar abuses. The episode underscores the urgent need for robust regulation and accountability to protect ordinary participants from elite manipulation.
