Eagles finalize 53-man roster, cut three seventh-round draft picks

Summary

Philadelphia released all three of its seventh-round selections as part of the final roster cuts, leaving 44 of the 53 players acquired in the past four years.

The Philadelphia Eagles trimmed their roster to 53 players on Sunday, releasing safety Cole Wisniewski, defensive tackle Uar Bernard and edge rusher Keyshawn James-Newby, all seventh-round draft picks. The moves marked the first time general manager Howie Roseman has cut three draft selections at the final deadline since 2011.

The finalized squad includes 27 offensive players, 23 defensive players and three specialists. Only nine members were on the team during the 2022 Super Bowl season, meaning 83 percent of the roster was added in the last four years. Of the 30 players drafted by the Eagles who remain, all but three of the first-four-round picks since 2020 are still on the active list; the sole early-round player not retained is 2020 first-rounder Jalen Reagor.

Seven undrafted players made the roster, with long snapper Rocco Underwood the only rookie to do so. The team now has 13 players aged 29 or older, including 38-year-old quarterback Andy Dalton, and 26 players 25 or younger. Seventeen players are new to the organization, comprising five draft picks, one undrafted rookie and eleven veterans acquired from other clubs.

The wide-receiver group saw significant turnover, with only two of six making the team having been on the roster a year earlier. Fourteen of the 22 starters from the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory remain, while the only players left from the Super Bowl LII win are offensive tackle Lane Johnson and kicker Jake Elliott.

"We’ll learn Monday whether Wisniewski, Bernard and James-Newby clear waivers and find their way back to the Eagles’ practice squad," the team’s communications noted.
