Trump says United States will respond forcefully after Iran targets Jordan bases

Summary

President Donald Trump told Fox News the U.S. will retaliate after Iran fired ballistic missiles at U.S.-operated airbases in Jordan, while U.S. officials said most missiles were intercepted.

President Donald Trump told Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst that the United States will respond to Iran’s missile strike on U.S.-operated King Hussein and al-Azraq airbases in Jordan. "We’re going to hit them hard," Trump said, adding that a response was forthcoming.

Jordan’s army reported intercepting eight missiles early Monday, and a U.S. official said all but one were shot down by American air-defence systems; the remaining missile was allowed to pass because it was not on a trajectory to strike a significant target.

Iran’s state television said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted technical infrastructure, maintenance facilities and fighter-jet positions at the Jordanian bases, causing “heavy damage.” The IRGC also claimed to have struck a U.S. base in the United Arab Emirates with a drone, a claim the UAE denied, stating its forces intercepted the drone over territorial waters.

U.S. Central Command refuted Iran’s assertion that a supertanker had hit mines in the Strait of Hormuz, calling the claim false. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated that Washington will maintain economic pressure on Tehran, noting that Iran’s economy is under strain but that the Iranian government must change its course.

In related diplomatic activity, Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian, attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Tehran still seeks a negotiated end to the conflict, while accusing the United States of not fulfilling its commitments.

The European Union announced it will work with the United States and other partners to sustain economic pressure on Iran, referencing the U.S.-led “Operation Economic Outcast.”
