Potential tropical system Edouard may bring rain to Texas and Louisiana coast

Summary

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a low-pressure area that could develop into Tropical Storm Edouard, bringing several inches of rain to parts of the Texas and Louisiana coasts, while the remnants of Dolly move toward the Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Center said an area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico could develop into a tropical system as early as today. If it strengthens, the system—potentially named Edouard—would move inland by Tuesday, bringing several inches of rain to the Texas and Louisiana coasts during the first half of the week. Hurricane hunters are scheduled to fly into the disturbance today to gather data.

Separately, the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly are advancing toward the northeast Caribbean. Although Dolly has weakened to an open wave, the moisture it carries is expected to produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds across the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hispaniola. The National Hurricane Center noted that the chance of Dolly redeveloping into a tropical storm before reaching land is low.

Both systems underscore the need for residents in the Gulf Coast and Caribbean to monitor forecasts and have hurricane preparedness plans in place.
