Patriots finalize 53-man roster, naming eight players as cuts and keepers
New England reduced its active roster to 53 players, retaining several surprise contributors while releasing others, including defensive tackle Eric Gregory and cornerback Kindle Vildor.
The New England Patriots completed a series of 42 transactions over the weekend, trimming the squad from 91 to the league-required 53 players. While most moves were anticipated, a few selections stood out as unexpected.
Quarterback Behren Morton secured the third-string spot, joining franchise starter Drake Maye and veteran backup Tommy DeVito as the team’s emergency option. Offensive tackle Dametrious Crownover retained his place despite a late trade for versatile lineman Walter Rouse, beating out Marcus Bryant for the fourth tackle slot. Defensive end Quintayvious Hutchins made the cut over fellow edge players Bradyn Swinson and Jesse Luketa, reflecting his development as a seventh-round pick. Linebacker Namdi Obiazor earned a roster spot largely through his contributions on special teams, helping the Patriots start the season with five off-ball linebackers. Cornerback Channing Canada joined three undrafted rookie free agents on the roster, a number not seen since 2017, after showing steadiness and special-teams ability.
Injured players who survived the cuts include interior lineman Ben Brown and punter Bryce Baringer, providing depth on both sides of the ball.
Conversely, defensive tackle Eric Gregory was released despite his size and solid camp performances, with the team opting for Joshua Farmer as the primary backup. Cornerback Kindle Vildor, signed as a free agent in March, failed to secure a spot after a poor showing in the preseason finale, leading to the promotion of rookies Karon Prunty and Channing Canada.
