Packers running back Josh Jacobs placed on NFL commissioner’s exempt list

Summary

The NFL has put Green Bay Packers RB Josh Jacobs on the commissioner’s exempt list following misdemeanor charges, meaning he will miss the start of the 2026 season.

The NFL announced on Aug. 30 that Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, removing him from practice and games while his legal case is reviewed. Jacobs, 28, was charged on Aug. 27 with two misdemeanors – battery and criminal damage to property – stemming from a May arrest, and is scheduled for an initial court appearance on Nov. 17.

"Josh Jacobs has been placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List, which is an administrative procedure used by the NFL while a matter is being reviewed. It is not a final determination. Josh respects the NFL process, the Packers, and his Coaches and Teammates. He looks forward to his return to the team and the NFL," the player’s attorneys said.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said after the team’s final preseason game that he expects Jacobs to remain a member of the roster, though his status for Week 1 is uncertain.

"I fully anticipate him being a member of our team," LaFleur told reporters.

Under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, players on the exempt list continue to receive pay and may attend certain team activities, but cannot practice or play in games. The Packers have listed MarShawn Lloyd as the primary backup, with rookie Kaleb Johnson expected to share duties if Jacobs remains sidelined.

The situation will be monitored as the legal process proceeds.
