Family of Southwest flight attendant seeks answers after death in Hawaii
The family of Southwest Airlines flight attendant Jenny Lupton, who was found dead at a Honolulu hotel on Aug. 20, says they received limited information from police for several days and are urging a thorough investigation.
Southwest Airlines flight attendant Jenny Lupton was discovered dead at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki on Aug. 20. Her family in Oklahoma says they were not contacted by the Honolulu Police Department until Aug. 24, four days after the incident, citing a state holiday that delayed communication.
The medical examiner attempted to notify the family on the day of the death, but the family did not see the message until the following morning. After learning of the death, they reached out to the police and later to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office for assistance. The attorney general’s office confirmed it is working with Hawaii officials to ensure a proper investigation.
Honolulu police said the investigation was opened as an unattended death on Aug. 20 and that no conclusions have been reached regarding the manner of death. They confirmed that the process required positive identification of the decedent before notifying next of kin, after which investigators contacted the family.
According to the family, the last text from Lupton was sent at 4:40 a.m. Hawaii time on Aug. 20, after which she returned to the hotel. Emergency services responded at 7:15 a.m. and pronounced her deceased at the scene. Police have not disclosed details about the hotel room, but family members were told that Lupton’s belongings suggested she was preparing to go out and that balcony furniture had not been moved.
Family spokesperson Hannah Lupton emphasized that they do not believe the death was a suicide and are awaiting further information from investigators. The Honolulu Police Department has indicated that the homicide detail is actively investigating the circumstances and will provide updates when available.
