Eagles finish preseason with loss as roster cuts approach

Summary

Philadelphia lost to Cincinnati 30-13 in the final preseason game, prompting a review of players who improved and those whose spots are in jeopardy ahead of the roster deadline.

Philadelphia concluded its preseason on Friday with a 30-13 defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals. The team now has until 6 p.m. on Sunday to trim its roster to the league-mandated 53 players before the regular-season opener against Washington on Sept. 13.

Running back Carson Steele stood out, recording 24 rushing yards, 52 receiving yards and a touchdown, while backup quarterback Andy Dalton completed 12 of 19 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown, earning a passer rating of 95.1. Defensive contributions included linebacker Smael Mondon Jr., who made a tackle for loss on a screen pass, and rookie linebacker Keyshawn James-Newby, who recorded a sack, a pressure and a forced fumble that the Eagles recovered.

Special teams also saw highlights: kicker Jake Elliott converted field goals from 45 and 56 yards, and undrafted defensive back Kapena Gushiken displayed versatility with snaps at safety and nickel corner, despite allowing a touchdown in the third quarter.

Conversely, several players saw their preseason stock fall. Wide receiver Makai Lemon managed three catches for three yards and dropped a pass that led to an interception, while also muffing a punt. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee completed only 12 of 22 passes for 55 yards and threw an interception, posting a passer rating of 41.1. Cornerback Mac McWilliams and rookie tight end E.J. Jenkins also struggled, with McWilliams giving up multiple completions and Jenkins dropping a pass early in the game. Offensive tackle Cameron Williams allowed quick pressures, and former third-round pick Ambry Thomas again surrendered chunk plays.

The performances will influence the final roster decisions as the Eagles aim to finalize their 53-man squad before the season opener.
