Raiders coach Kubiak says quarterback starter for opening game remains undecided
Oakland Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak has not announced the starting quarterback for the Week 1 matchup against Miami, indicating further evaluation is needed.
Oakland Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak said he is not ready to name a starting quarterback for the team's Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins, which is scheduled in 17 days. The comment came after the preseason finale in which both Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza saw playing time against the San Francisco 49ers.
During the post-game press conference, Kubiak noted that Mendoza needs additional preseason experience, stating, "He needs another three preseason games. You know, all those rookies do. And now that the season’s starting, you know, the practice reps get smaller, and that’s just life. But, us as coaches, we gotta get them ready to play, keep developing them."
He added, "We got him plenty of time, and I’m happy where he’s at, but we just got to keep pushing him to be better," but did not commit to a Week 1 starter. The decision will be made as the regular season approaches.
