Lions finish training camp with offensive surge in final scrimmage
The Detroit Lions wrapped up training camp with a scrimmage that featured a 99-yard drive ending in a touchdown and several big plays by the offense, while the defense continued its strong showing.
Detroit – The Lions concluded their preseason training camp with a scrimmage-style practice that highlighted an offense that finally clicked after a month of defensive dominance. The first drive began at the one-yard line and produced a 99-yard, 7-play march capped by a touchdown catch by Jameson Williams in the back of the end zone. Subsequent drives saw a mix of outcomes, including a 71-yard touchdown run by Jahmyr Gibbs, a 16-yard pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown, and a 52-yard field-goal attempt that missed.
Key offensive moments included a 21-yard reception by Williams on the opening play, a screen pass to Isaac TeSlaa for 14 yards, and a 59-yard run by Gibbs after a block from Tate Ratledge. The Lions’ run game was inconsistent, registering short gains of 5, –2, –1, 2 and 1 yards on early attempts, but later producing explosive runs by Gibbs and Trayveon Williams.
Defensively, the unit remained active, with players such as Levi Onwuzurike, Skyler Gill-Howard, and Devin White rotating in. Notable defensive plays included a sack by Rodriguez on a third-and-long situation and pressure from Gill-Howard and D.J. Wonnum that forced an incompletion on a third down.
The second-team and third-team units also saw action. The second team managed a 20-yard drive and a missed 71-yard field-goal attempt, while the third team recorded a 31-yard touchdown run by Trayveon Williams. Overall, the scrimmage suggested the Lions’ wide receivers performed well against a secondary that has been described as “sticky,” and the offense displayed the ability to generate big plays despite an uneven running game.
"The offense finally came alive in the final week of camp," a team spokesperson said.
The practice wrapped up with the Lions holding a narrow lead, 23-20, after a late-game touchdown run by Gibbs, signaling a positive momentum heading into the regular season.
