Meta's $10 Billion AI Data Center in Louisiana Gains Regulatory Approval

Summary

Meta's planned $10 billion AI data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, has received regulatory approval, with construction set to continue through 2030.

Meta's planned $10 billion artificial intelligence data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, has received regulatory approval, with construction set to continue through 2030. The facility is expected to create over 500 direct jobs and more than 1,000 indirect jobs, with 5,000 construction workers at peak. The expansive technology campus will occupy 4 million square feet on a 2,250-acre site.

To meet the data center's substantial energy demands, Entergy Louisiana has been authorized to construct three combined-cycle combustion turbine generation facilities. Two of these plants, located in Richland Parish, are expected to come online in 2028, while the third, at Entergy's existing Waterford site in St. Charles Parish, is slated for late 2029. Additionally, Entergy will develop new transmission infrastructure and has been authorized to procure up to 1,500 megawatts of solar energy resources.

Meta has committed to matching its electricity use with 100% clean and renewable energy and plans to invest over $200 million in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water systems.

Governor Jeff Landry highlighted the project's significance, stating, "Meta's investment establishes the region as an anchor in Louisiana's rapidly expanding tech sector, revitalizes one of our state's beautiful rural areas, and creates opportunities for Louisiana workers to fill high-paying jobs of the future."

The data center is part of Meta's broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities, supporting platforms such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.

While the project has garnered support for its economic potential, some environmental advocates have raised concerns about the reliance on fossil fuels and the impact on local resources.

Construction is expected to continue through 2030, with Meta and Entergy collaborating to address energy needs and environmental considerations.
