Patriots unlikely to match Seahawks' $132 million offer for cornerback Christian Gonzalez

Summary

The New England Patriots are not expected to meet the four-year, $132 million contract that the Seattle Seahawks gave to Devon Witherspoon, making a similar deal for Christian Gonzalez improbable.

New England Patriots officials appear unwilling to match the four-year, $132 million contract the Seattle Seahawks recently granted to cornerback Devon Witherspoon, according to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter. Schefter said on a sports radio program that the Patriots "haven’t gone there" and do not seem poised to do so now.

Because Witherspoon and Gonzalez share representation through the Win Sports Group, analysts say it is unlikely the Patriots would extend Gonzalez without offering a comparable deal. Gonzalez, the 17th overall pick in the 2023 draft, is set to earn a base salary of $2.259 million for the upcoming season. He recorded 145 tackles, two interceptions, 24 pass breakups and a sack over three seasons, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2025.

The Patriots will face the Seahawks and Witherspoon in their season opener on Sept. 9, a matchup that could highlight the contract disparity between the two cornerbacks.
