Rockstar reveals seamless character switching and couple gameplay in GTA 6 preview

Summary

A preview in Dazed magazine details how Grand Theft Auto VI will let players switch between protagonists Jason and Lucia, including playing as a couple, and outlines new reactive world mechanics.

A preview published in the autumn 2026 issue of Dazed magazine provides new details on Rockstar's upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI. The game will feature two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, who can be played individually or together, with seamless switching even during shared missions. For example, a car ride to a job allows players to alternate between driving as Jason and viewing in-game social media as Lucia, and the mechanic continues into a subsequent chase where players can switch between driving and shooting.

The relationship between the two characters is described as a central element, influencing gameplay through activities such as beach outings or jetski rides. Rockstar is also expanding its choice-driven systems, creating a more reactive environment where NPCs respond differently to the player’s actions, such as carrying a rifle or walking unarmed. Body-weight mechanics from earlier titles return, affecting character appearance based on eating and exercise habits.

"We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters," said Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, noting that research trips to Miami informed the game's design.

The preview also mentions ongoing labor disputes at Rockstar. The studio dismissed dozens of employees late last year, which Take-Two justified as "gross misconduct," while the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain characterized the terminations as "victimisation and collective dismissal linked to trade union activity." The newly formed Rockstar Game Workers Union is seeking voluntary recognition.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
