Falcons may shift starting quarterback role to Michael Penin Jr. amid Tua Tagovailoa's preseason struggles

Summary

Reports indicate the Atlanta Falcons could move Michael Penix Jr. into the starting quarterback position earlier than planned due to inconsistent preseason performances by Tua Tagovailoa.

The Atlanta Falcons are considering accelerating Michael Penix Jr.'s return from an ACL injury to take over the starting quarterback duties, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. The team had initially expected veteran Tua Tagovailoa, acquired after his release from Miami, to start the season while allowing Penix a gradual recovery.

Rapoport said the organization’s original plan was to have Tagovailoa start immediately and keep Penix inactive for several games to ensure his health. Tagovailoa’s limited production in camp and a 3-for-5, 22-yard showing in the first preseason game against Denver prompted head coach Kevin Stefanski to rotate in other quarterbacks.

"It really seemed that the goal of the entire organization was to have Tua be the starting quarterback right away to start the season," Rapoport quoted.

"Tua’s play made that impossible, not just in the preseason game, which we’ve seen, but it sounds like practice as well. All of which is to say, this is Michael Penix’s job for the taking," he added.

Stefanski emphasized the competitive environment in the building, noting that position battles are part of the team's culture. The decision on the starter is expected before the Falcons open the season on September 13 in Pittsburgh.
