SpaceX to build $100 billion Starbase spaceport in Louisiana
SpaceX plans to invest $100 billion in a new Gulf Coast launch complex, with construction slated to begin in 2027 and the first Starship launch targeted for 2029.
SpaceX announced plans to develop a second launch facility for its Starship vehicle on a former Exxon site in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, roughly ten hours’ drive from its existing Starbase in Texas. The company says the $100 billion project will break ground in 2027 and aims to conduct the first Starship flight from the site by 2029, while state officials expect initial operations to be online by 2030.
Louisiana Economic Development estimates the new complex will generate about 3,000 direct jobs over a decade, with an average salary of $92,600, and peak construction activity could support more than 30,000 workers. The agency also noted that SpaceX has engaged state wildlife and fisheries authorities to address potential environmental impacts.
"We are very excited to be in this position to receive one of the best opportunities of a lifetime which will bring not only a variety of jobs to our Parish but will offer opportunities to our grandchildren allowing them to stay home for employment," said Chad Vallo, president of the Vermilion Parish Police Jury.
The company envisions the site as a self-sustaining spaceport featuring propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, vehicle processing facilities and an airport. SpaceX continues to test Starship, having completed 13 flights since 2023, with a 14th test planned to attempt an orbital upper-stage flight. CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the Falcon rocket family will be retired once Starship achieves frequent weekly launches.
