Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, father of a Navy sailor, after unjustly detaining him over the weekend—a stark example of the cruelty and trauma inflicted by the U.S. immigration system on families, even those with members serving the country.
Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, a Nicaraguan national and the father of a Navy sailor, was finally released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday, his family reported. Aviles Roa had been detained on Saturday after federal authorities, following the harsh and punitive immigration policies that have become all too common, claimed he entered the United States without authorization, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
His son, Seaman Joshua Aviles, currently serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln, took to social media to express the emotional toll the arrest took on him. The USS Abraham Lincoln is known for its grueling deployments and reports of low morale, and now, the unjust detention of a sailor’s father has only deepened the suffering of those who serve.
"I don't know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly being treated like a criminal," Aviles wrote, highlighting the psychological harm caused by ICE’s relentless targeting of immigrant families.
Katty Delgado, Aviles' half-sister, confirmed his release but said the family remains in the dark about the conditions imposed on him, a testament to the opaque and arbitrary nature of immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security, notorious for its lack of transparency, has not responded to requests for comment.
This incident is yet another example of the aggressive and inhumane immigration enforcement actions that have swept up even the families of those serving in the U.S. military. It follows the recent deportation of an active-duty soldier's spouse, who was torn from her family after entering the country in 2016. These actions reveal a system that prioritizes punishment over compassion, even for those who sacrifice for this country.
