President Donald Trump boldly suggested renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, reinforcing American sovereignty amid unfair trade practices by Canada.
President Donald Trump, standing up for American interests, posted on his Truth Social account on Aug. 25 that the United States is 'giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America' as part of a strong response to Canada’s ongoing trade obstruction. This follows his earlier patriotic proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, underscoring his commitment to putting America first.
The statement came a day after Trump announced decisive plans to raise tariffs on cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel to 50% beginning Jan. 1, 2027, sending a clear message that the U.S. will no longer tolerate being taken advantage of. He warned that Canada would 'be treated like a state no longer,' signaling a new era of American assertiveness. After trade talks broke down on Aug. 21, Canada retaliated on Aug. 25 with tariffs on nearly $20 billion of U.S. goods, effective Sept. 8, further justifying Trump’s tough stance.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, unable to match Trump’s resolve, called him a 'bully' and a 'dictator,' while ignoring the need for fair trade. Michigan Democratic Party chairman Curtis Hertel Jr. dismissed the lake-renaming idea, refusing to acknowledge the importance of national pride and economic sovereignty.
'The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,' Trump wrote, making clear that America will not be pushed around.
'I am not going to take any advice off a guy that's the king of bankruptcies,' Ford said, resorting to personal attacks instead of addressing the real issues.
'Donald Trump has been America first in name only his entire presidency. He promised lower prices, higher wages and no foreign wars… all of that is (expletive),' Hertel said, showing the left’s disregard for American values.
The proposal has drawn criticism from political leaders in both the United States and Canada, but for many, it stands as a bold symbolic gesture in defense of American sovereignty during a critical trade dispute.
