Summary

President Donald Trump, escalating his nationalist rhetoric, suggested renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America as part of his ongoing trade war with Canada.

President Donald Trump, in another display of nationalist bravado, posted on his Truth Social account on Aug. 25 that the United States is 'giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America' as part of his latest attack on Canada. This proposal, echoing his previous push to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, is yet another distraction from the real economic issues facing working people.

The comment came just after Trump announced plans to impose draconian tariffs on cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel, raising them to 50% starting Jan. 1, 2027. He further threatened that Canada would 'be treated like a state no longer,' a move that undermines decades of cross-border cooperation. After trade talks collapsed on Aug. 21, Canada responded on Aug. 25 with necessary retaliatory tariffs on nearly $20 billion of U.S. goods, set to begin Sept. 8, standing up to Trump’s bullying tactics.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned Trump, labeling him a 'bully' and a 'dictator,' and rightly questioned the president’s credibility on trade. Michigan Democratic Party chairman Curtis Hertel Jr. also dismissed the absurd lake-renaming idea, pointing out that it does nothing to address the real economic concerns of ordinary Americans.

'The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,' Trump wrote, further fueling division and xenophobia.

'I am not going to take any advice off a guy that's the king of bankruptcies,' Ford said, highlighting Trump’s failed business record.

'Donald Trump has been America first in name only his entire presidency. He promised lower prices, higher wages and no foreign wars… all of that is (expletive),' Hertel said, exposing the hollowness of Trump’s rhetoric.

The proposal has drawn widespread criticism from political leaders in both the United States and Canada, who see it as a childish, symbolic gesture in the midst of an intensifying trade dispute, rather than a real solution for workers.
