Trump mulls renaming Lake Ontario amid escalating U.S.-Canada trade dispute

Resumen

President Donald Trump said he is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” as the United States imposes new tariffs on Canadian goods, heightening tensions between the two countries.

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is weighing a proposal to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” a move he said reflects the United States’ reduced trade with the Canadian province. The suggestion follows the administration’s recent imposition of 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports after bilateral talks broke down.

Canada is expected to announce retaliatory measures later Tuesday, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s finance minister, François-Philippe Champagne, is slated to outline support for workers affected by the tariffs. Canadian officials have warned that the United States is seeking to undermine key Canadian sectors, including autos, steel and aluminum.

The dispute comes after Trump previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” by executive order. Trade between the United States and Canada is deeply integrated, and analysts say a prolonged conflict could raise costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.

"The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer," Trump wrote on social media.

"An attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States is not something we’re going to accept," Canadian finance minister Trudeau said.

Local business owners expressed concern about the impact of the tariffs. Michael Howard II, who runs a furniture company near Detroit, said the measures threaten his ability to sustain his family business and support the community.

Both governments indicated that further negotiations will focus on targeted responses rather than matching tariffs dollar for dollar, aiming to protect domestic industries while seeking a resolution to the trade impasse.
