UN-Backed Panel Declares Famine in Gaza City Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

Summary

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has officially declared a famine in Gaza City, with over half a million people facing starvation and the crisis expected to worsen without immediate intervention.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a United Nations-backed panel, has officially declared a famine in Gaza City and its surrounding areas, marking the first such declaration in the region. The IPC's analysis indicates that over 500,000 people are currently experiencing starvation, destitution, and preventable deaths. The crisis is projected to expand to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis governorates by late September if immediate action is not taken.

The IPC's assessment is based on three critical thresholds: extreme food deprivation, acute malnutrition, and starvation-related deaths. The report highlights that nearly 98% of cropland in Gaza is damaged or inaccessible, severely impacting local food production. Additionally, more than 12,000 children were identified as acutely malnourished in July alone, a six-fold increase since the start of the year.

In response to the declaration, the Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected the IPC's findings, labeling them as "tailor-made to fit Hamas’s fake campaign." The ministry emphasized Israel's efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have called for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to address the escalating crisis. They stress that without urgent intervention, famine conditions will likely spread, leading to further loss of life.
