Browns announce Deshaun Watson as starting quarterback for season opener
Cleveland head coach Todd Monken confirmed Deshaun Watson will start against Jacksonville, choosing him over rookie Shedeur Sanders for the first game of the 2025 season.
Cleveland head coach Todd Monken said Deshaun Watson will be the starting quarterback for the Browns' season-opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, selecting him over rookie Shedeur Sanders. Monken cited Watson's overall performance in the offseason, training camp and preseason as giving the team the best chance to move the ball and score points.
Watson, who has not played since re-rupturing his Achilles tendon in January 2025, issued an apology for comments he made after a poor preseason showing against the Buffalo Bills, saying his remarks were emotional and not intended to disrespect fans. He added that he wants to focus on football and deliver his best effort.
Monken noted that while Watson earned the starting role, Sanders made significant progress during the preseason and the team is optimistic about his future. The decision comes as the Browns enter the final year of Watson's fully guaranteed five-year contract, having overhauled the offensive line and added first-round draft pick wide receiver KC Concepcion and second-round pick Denzel Boston to the roster.
The move follows a preseason where Watson completed 5 of 12 passes for 35 yards and an interception in the second week, a performance that drew boos from the crowd. Despite the criticism, Monken said the quarterback competition proceeded as planned and will not be revisited week to week.
