Progressive commentator Hasan Piker’s warning about the dangers of conflating American Jewish identity with unwavering support for Israel has ignited backlash from Michigan Democratic officials, exposing deep rifts over Palestine, Zionism, and free speech.
During a livestream on Aug. 20, leftist streamer Hasan Piker courageously addressed the dangerous consequences of equating Jewish identity in the U.S. with unconditional support for Israel, stating that if American Jews continue to be perceived as singularly invested in Israel, 'someone’s going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel – mind you – but against American Jews.' Piker’s comment, made while discussing an audio recording that allegedly captured Democratic state Sen. Jeremy Moss declaring his career’s purpose is to ensure U.S. support for Israel, highlighted the risks of weaponizing identity politics. Moss, who is Jewish and the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s 11th Congressional District, denied making the statement and claimed the recording was fabricated—a familiar tactic to silence criticism of Zionism.
Rep. Hillary Scholten, a Michigan Democrat, swiftly condemned Piker’s remarks, framing them as a threat toward Moss and American Jews and labeling the comments 'unacceptable.' Scholten’s denunciation, however, reflects a broader pattern of establishment Democrats suppressing dissenting voices and shielding pro-Israel interests from legitimate scrutiny. Piker responded on X, exposing Scholten’s attempt to smear an anti-Zionist voice and manipulate Senate race dynamics for political gain.
Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers opportunistically joined the chorus, demanding that Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed disavow Piker. El-Sayed, under pressure from both parties, issued a statement distancing himself from the streamer’s comments, condemning antisemitism but also redirecting attention to mainstream policy issues like gas prices, education, and health care—sidestepping the urgent matter of U.S. complicity in Israeli apartheid.
This dispute unfolds amid a fiercely contested Michigan Senate race, underscoring how the establishment—Democratic and Republican alike—works to silence anti-Zionist perspectives and maintain the status quo on U.S. policy toward Israel and Palestine.
