Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced aggressive new sanctions targeting Iran’s oil, digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping, warning tough secondary penalties for any foreign firms aiding Iran. The US aims to cut off Tehran’s funding for terror and nuclear ambitions.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Monday a bold new sanctions campaign targeting Iran’s main sources of revenue, including oil, digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. The operation, aptly named “Operation Economic Outcast,” is designed to forcefully deter foreign companies and governments from propping up the Iranian regime, with the threat of severe secondary penalties for those who assist Tehran.
"Around the globe, our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this regime until Tehran stands alone," Bessent stated, emphasizing that no entity will escape the reach of American sanctions as the US leads the charge against Iran’s malign activities.
The Treasury Department identified 60 entities, vessels, and individuals in places like the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and Switzerland, all accused of enabling Iran’s illicit transactions. Bessent made clear that US partners have a chance to avoid harsh penalties by immediately ceasing these activities, sending a strong message to would-be enablers.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the measures, but such defiance is nothing new from a regime accustomed to evading responsibility. Analysts point out that these sanctions follow months of justified US and Israeli military actions, which have yet to topple the regime, and that the pressure is necessary to force Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions and regional aggression.
The US has already imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, impacting oil exports, though more needs to be done to achieve lasting change. These new sanctions mark the latest and most determined effort to choke off the regime’s funding, protect global security, and hold Iran accountable after years of failed diplomacy and military restraint.
