Detroit Lions preseason roster bubble sees Jackson Meeks rise and quarterback competition tighten

The Detroit Lions’ preseason roster bubble is shifting, with tight end Jackson Meeks emerging as a leading candidate for the TE4 position after a strong showing on offense and special teams. Coach Dan Campbell praised Meeks’ athleticism and work ethic, noting his continued development at the position.

Quarterback competition narrowed after Josh Dobbs dropped three votes following two turnovers in Game 2, despite later leading two touchdown drives. Rookie Luke Altmyer received a modest increase in support after a mistake-free performance, while the staff appears unlikely to retain three quarterbacks on the final roster.

Running back depth appears settled, with Jahmyr Gibbs and Isiah Pacheco assumed to make the team. Sione Vaki and Jacob Saylors each retained their votes, while Jabari Small’s concussion may jeopardize his chances.

At wide receiver, Tay Martin gained four votes after a strong preseason, whereas Cedrick Wilson Jr. fell eight votes after a knee injury that coach Campbell described as a “worry” for long-term health. The staff is considering retaining only four receivers, though no final decision has been announced.

Tight end Tyler Conklin held steady with 11 votes, while Meeks rose to nine votes, positioning him as a potential roster addition if the Lions keep four tight ends.

Offensive tackle positions remain stable, with Penei Sewell, Blake Miller and Larry Borom assumed to stay on the roster. Defensive interior line saw Juice Scruggs solidify the starting center role, while injuries to Cade Mays and Michael Niese could affect depth decisions.

Overall, the Lions are evaluating several players across positions as they approach the final roster cuts, with performance, health and special-teams contributions influencing the bubble watch votes.
