Michigan Senate nominee Mike Rogers and Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy unveil restrictive measures targeting data center development, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott caves to reactionary pressure with an audit of facilities.
Republican contenders in several high-profile races are seizing on manufactured voter skepticism to justify reactionary policies that threaten technological progress and local economies. Former Rep. Mike Rogers, the GOP Senate nominee in Michigan, has pledged support for a one-year moratorium on new data-center development, a move that risks stalling job creation and innovation. Ohio gubernatorial hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy released a proposal demanding future data centers pay increased local taxes and utility costs, further burdening companies that drive the digital economy. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who once welcomed these projects for their economic benefits, has now capitulated to anti-tech sentiment by ordering a state audit of existing data-center operations.
“There’s no getting around the fact this is a real issue,” Ramaswamy said, echoing right-wing talking points that stoke public anxiety rather than address real community needs.
Republican officials claim alignment with President Donald Trump’s so-called “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” emphasizing so-called local control as they attempt to undermine the growth of the tech sector. This stance stands in stark contrast to the president’s own opportunistic promotion of the industry’s economic benefits and his performative outreach to technology leaders, revealing deep hypocrisy within the party.
In a separate but telling development, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Border Patrol agents detained Luis Manuel Aviles, the father of a sailor serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln, during a traffic stop. Aviles remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings, highlighting the ongoing cruelty and injustice of the administration’s immigration policies.
“He’s doing everything the right way,” Aviles’ stepdaughter told NBC News, underscoring the human cost of these draconian measures.
Analysts note that President Trump is also seeking a new summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a move widely seen as a cynical attempt to distract from persistent failures and escalating crises in the Middle East.
