Spider-Man Leads Box Office as The Odyssey Sets New Nolan Record

Summary

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" topped the domestic box office for a fourth weekend, while Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" became his highest-grossing film worldwide.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" remained the top-earning film in North America for a fourth consecutive weekend, adding $39 million from 4,006 theaters, according to studio estimates. The superhero sequel now totals over $854.9 million domestically and is on track to overtake "Avengers: Endgame" as the second-highest-grossing domestic release of all time, behind "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The horror sequel "Insidious: Out of the Further" posted the second-largest weekend haul, earning $25.3 million from 3,303 venues. "The Odyssey" held third place with a $19.5 million increase, bringing its North American total to just under $539.1 million and surpassing Nolan's previous record set by "The Dark Knight." Internationally, the film added $68 million, raising its worldwide gross to $1.4 billion.

Other new releases included the action film "Mutiny," which opened with $7.5 million, and the comedy "Spa Weekend," which earned $3.1 million. Re-releases such as the 25th-anniversary edition of "The Fast and the Furious" and the family title "The Magic Faraway Tree" generated modest earnings.

The summer season, running through Labor Day, has produced an estimated $4.4 billion in North American ticket sales, ranking among the four highest-grossing summers on record. > "We’re in the home stretch of what I think will go down in box office history as maybe one of the most key and pivotal summer movie seasons ever," said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak. > "The thing that I’m most excited about, frankly, is just the enthusiasm of moviegoers," said Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of Cinema United.
