Tesla to Recall Nearly 3 Million Vehicles in China Over Door-Handle Issue

Summary

Tesla will recall about 2.98 million Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X cars in China because electronic door handles may become hard to operate after a severe crash.

Tesla announced on Friday that it will recall roughly 2.98 million vehicles in China, covering both imported and locally produced Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X cars. The recall follows concerns that the cars' electronically operated, retractable door handles could become difficult to operate after a severe collision if the low-voltage system fails, potentially hindering occupants from exiting the vehicle and complicating rescue efforts.

"The problem could hinder occupants from quickly opening the doors to escape and impede rescue efforts by those outside the vehicle, posing a safety hazard," the company said.

Tesla plans to affix warning labels to affected vehicles and will remotely upgrade the window-control software so that windows automatically lower after an accident. Owners whose cars cannot receive the remote fix will be contacted to arrange service appointments.

In a separate recall, Tesla will also provide a software update and in-cabin camera monitoring to improve driver-monitoring systems. The recall follows earlier actions in May that affected about 175 Cybertrucks over wheel-stud concerns and more than 218,000 other models due to delayed rear-view camera images.

The recall adds to a wave of Chinese vehicle recalls, with eight other manufacturers announcing actions that together affect about 4.3 million cars. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the automakers have not indicated plans for similar recalls in the United States.
