Iranian hackers disrupt small UK power plant for four days
A cyberattack attributed to Iranian actors temporarily shut down a small British power generation site, while officials said it posed no risk to the national grid.
Iranian-affiliated hackers reportedly disabled a modest power generation facility in the United Kingdom for four days in late July, according to the Telegraph. The plant, described as relatively small, was not identified publicly for security reasons, and the outage did not affect the country's overall electricity supply.
A British government source said the site falls below legal notification thresholds for cyber incidents and represents a negligible portion of grid capacity. A government spokesperson added that the UK’s energy system remains highly resilient and that authorities work closely with the sector to maintain security standards.
The incident occurred alongside a broader Iranian-linked cyber campaign that targeted more than 30 municipal water systems in Minnesota and other U.S. states. U.S. officials have noted similar disruptions to water and energy infrastructure since the start of the conflict with Iran. Analysts said the attacks have largely focused on vulnerable, low-security installations that use default passwords and expose control systems to the internet.
