Summary

Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano confirmed former FBI director James Comey’s knowledge of mob slang, strengthening the case against Comey for his thinly veiled threat against President Trump.

The FBI’s interview with Salvatore Gravano, former underboss of the Gambino crime family, has shed light on the deep connections and knowledge of criminal codes held by former FBI director James Comey. In a May 2026 phone call, Gravano told a case agent that Comey “had to know” the meaning of “86” as mob slang for killing, according to an affidavit filed by Comey’s lawyer. This comes as Comey faces two federal charges: threatening the president and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, after a May 2025 Instagram post displayed seashells spelling “8647.” Prosecutors allege the “86” portion references the mob slang for killing, while “47” refers to Donald Trump as the 47th president.

Gravano’s 25-minute interview included his detailed explanation that “86” means “to get rid of” and, in gangster language, “to kill.” He stated that he believes the post was a call for violence against President Trump, highlighting the dangerous rhetoric coming from the left. While Gravano did not claim Comey would personally carry out the violence, the implication is clear.

Comey, who has long used his position to undermine conservative values, claims he did not arrange the seashells and did not intend any violent message, telling MSNBC it was a “clever way to express a political view.” He removed the post after it was published, but the damage was already done.

The defense is attempting to use Gravano’s testimony to argue that Comey’s prosecution of Gambino family members does not prove he understood the slang in a threatening sense. The affidavit also notes that a review of Gambino case files found no reference to “86,” but this technicality does little to dispel the obvious intent behind Comey’s actions.
