Meghan Markle's Reported Role in Guy Ritchie Series Withdrawn After UK Backlash
Reports indicate that Meghan Markle's planned appearance in the third season of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen has been cancelled following strong criticism in the United Kingdom.
Tina Brown, a former editor of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, wrote on Substack that the casting of Meghan Markle in season three of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen has been withdrawn after what she described as intense backlash in the United Kingdom, making the project untenable. > "The backlash in the UK was so intense, it became untenable to go forward," Brown said in her column.
The Hollywood Reporter did not receive comment from Markle’s representatives or from WME, the agency that represents both Markle and Ritchie. Brown confirmed she stands by her reporting. The series, adapted from Ritchie’s 2019 film, has not yet been renewed for a third season, and season two is set to premiere on September 3.
If the role had proceeded, it would have marked Markle’s return to acting since she left the profession in 2017 after becoming engaged to Prince Harry. Recent reports suggest the couple’s decision to relocate back to the United Kingdom was partly influenced by the potential acting opportunity.
