Alabama taps sophomore Keelon Russell as starting quarterback

Summary

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer is expected to name sophomore Keelon Russell the team's starting quarterback, ending the competition with senior Austin Mack.

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer is poised to announce sophomore Keelon Russell as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback, sources told CBS Sports on Saturday. The decision ends a competition that began in spring practice and continued through fall camp, with Russell edging out senior Austin Mack for the role.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said the staff was "close" to finalizing the choice, aligning with DeBoer's timeline to decide after the second fall camp scrimmage. Russell, the highest-rated quarterback recruit in Alabama's recent class, showed consistency in his second season, handling the offense's system and demonstrating dual-threat capabilities that could challenge opposing defenses.

Russell appeared in two games as a freshman, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns, primarily against Eastern Illinois. He was a former national Gatorade Player of the Year at Duncanville High School in Texas and recorded more than 90 touchdowns over his final two high-school seasons.

Mack, a former Washington transfer who served as backup to Ty Simpson last season, will remain on the roster but will not start. DeBoer emphasized that Russell does not need to be a finished product immediately and that the quarterback will face pressure typical of Alabama's program.

The offense is undergoing significant turnover, with only three starters returning and roughly 30% of last season's offensive snaps coming back, the fourth-lowest percentage among SEC teams. Veteran receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams is expected to provide a reliable target as the unit integrates additional underclassmen.

Analysts note that Alabama entered the season ranked No. 13 in the AP preseason poll, its lowest ranking since 2008, and faces a challenging schedule that includes games against Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M and LSU. The team is projected to win about 8.5 games, according to betting odds, and remains a contender for the SEC title.

Russell's development will be a key factor in determining whether Alabama can improve on recent seasons and contend for a national championship.
