Lando Norris Takes Provisional Pole at Dutch Grand Prix Amid Rain Threat
Lando Norris posted the fastest time in qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix as teams prepared for possible rain, while several drivers fought for positions in a tightly contested session.
Lando Norris set the quickest lap in the opening qualifying session for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, posting a time of 1:11.344 as rain clouds gathered over the circuit. The threat of precipitation prompted teams to rush cars back to the garage for a second run on fresh tyres before conditions deteriorated.
Mercedes driver George Russell, who qualified second, questioned the timing of the rain, noting that forecasts suggested it could arrive in the final five minutes of the session. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen responded that the situation was not unsafe, adding that he expected his teammate to be disappointed.
"We'll probably have George crying about that on the radio, but it was nothing unsafe," Verstappen said.
Other notable performances included Oscar Piastri, who was within a quarter of a second of Norris, and Charles Leclerc, who moved into third after improving his sector times. Lewis Hamilton, who struggled early in the weekend, qualified eighth after a lock-up at Turn 1.
The session saw several drivers eliminated early, including Antonio Giovinazzi and Mick Schumacher, while newcomers such as Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressed with sector-one speed despite not advancing. As the window for a second run narrowed, teams focused on tyre temperature management, with some drivers opting for an additional preparation lap.
The qualifying order after the final runs placed Norris on provisional pole, followed by Russell, Piastri, Leclerc, and Verstappen. The grid remained tightly packed, with margins of a few hundredths of a second separating the top ten.
