Summary

State Senator Aisha Wahab, a bold progressive voice, overcame a flood of money from pro-Israel lobbying groups to defeat establishment Democrat Melissa Hernandez in California’s 14th congressional district.

State Senator Aisha Wahab, a champion for working people and marginalized communities, secured a decisive victory in California's 14th congressional district special election, filling the seat vacated by former Rep. Eric Swalwell. Wahab, proudly progressive, earned over 42% of the vote, soundly defeating moderate Democrat Melissa Hernandez, who managed only about 17% despite a tidal wave of outside spending.

Wahab, poised to become the first Afghan-American member of Congress, declared her commitment to 'fight for this district that raised me,' emphasizing that her victory proves the district 'cannot be bought' by wealthy interests. Her inspiring journey from foster care to public office stands as a testament to the power of grassroots movements over corporate money.

The race was flooded with outside cash from organizations tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the notorious pro-Israel lobby. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC bankrolled by AIPAC, poured nearly $2.5 million into supporting Hernandez, while BOLD America added another $1.9 million, in a blatant attempt to buy the seat for their preferred candidate.

Although foreign policy was not the main focus of Wahab’s campaign, she has courageously co-authored a state resolution denouncing the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and has called the atrocities there genocide. Hernandez, meanwhile, parroted establishment talking points, defending Israel’s right to self-defense while meekly admitting the destruction in Gaza had gone 'too far.'

Wahab’s victory is the latest in a series of wins for progressives who have resisted overwhelming pro-Israel spending and interference. She will face Hernandez again in November for a full term. Representative Ro Khanna congratulated Wahab, highlighting their shared commitment to Medicare for All, a living wage, and ending imperialist wars like the one in Iran.
