Taylor Sheridan Says $330 Million Ranch Purchase Delayed His Retirement Plans

Summary

The creator of “Yellowstone” explained that buying the Four Sixes Ranch led him to sign a new deal with Paramount, postponing his intended retirement.

Taylor Sheridan, the writer and producer behind the television series “Yellowstone,” told host Dale Brisby on the “Rodeo Time” podcast that acquiring the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas prevented him from retiring as planned. He had intended to step back after completing the series, but the $330 million purchase prompted him to negotiate an overall agreement with Paramount.

Sheridan said the opportunity arose after the ranch’s former owner, Anne Marion, died. He had met Marion while filming “Yellowstone” on the property, and her estate sought a buyer who would preserve her vision. When approached, Sheridan noted he was “about $300 million short” of the asking price, but he assembled a group of investors to complete the deal, which closed in January 2022.

“I knew that if I bought this ranch, I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while,” Sheridan said.

The Four Sixes Ranch, founded in 1870 and known for Angus cattle and Quarter horses, spans more than 140,000 acres and was listed with two additional parcels. The transaction included all three ranches and their inventory, according to the listing agent, Sam Middleton.

Sheridan’s new Paramount agreement may end when his current contract expires, with reports that he could move to NBCUniversal thereafter.
